I don't want people to type in my old first and last name and pull up my account. I want them to type in my new name and be able to pull up my account. So I guess what I'm asking is how do I change the last name that I originally signed up with not just the display name?

Um i think that it is that u go to Account Settings, maybe..?? Or when u go to edit your quote, or your display name, under it. try those places

on myspace..Goto Edit profile..Then click the tab that says "name"

Does everyone put their full names? That seems pretty risky to me... even if it's a common name, and even more risky if you have where you live on there. I thought it was always a good practice to NEVER use real names. I don't mean to lie, just to use nick names created for internet use. Something to think about.
